Madison County Community Coalition (MCCC)
Our mission is to increase community collaboration and reduce substance abuse
in Madison County, AR.
Drug Free Communities Grant
The Madison County Community Coalition(MCCC) serves Madison County, Arkansas, a very
rural county located in the northwest portion of the state with a population of 14,345, 3.1% of
which are Hispanic. Madison County Community Coalition's mission is to reduce substance
abuse and increase community collaboration. Our mission coincides with the goals of the Drug
Free Communities Support Program. The goals of the FY2006-2007 DFC Application are to
strengthen community collaboration and reduce substance abuse among youth and, over time,
among adults. In order to strengthen community collaboration, this year's objectives included
maintaining membership, expanding and diversifying membership, and educating and mobilizing
the community. In order to meet our second goal of reducing substance abuse, MCCC took a
strategic and comprehensive approach when planning its objectives for the 2006-2007 grant
year. Those objectives include planning a set of activities most likely to positively affect identified
community problems as well as assessing the impact of these activities on substance abuse.
Specific activities planned for our community are: 1) Life Skills training for 5 th , 6 th , and 7 th
grade students 2) Social marketing campaigns to disseminate substance abuse prevention
messages 3) Home visiting program activities 4) Sponsoring trainings for tobacco retailer
employees to prevent illegal sales to minors 5) Enlisting the help of the medical community
including dentists and pharmacists to reduce spit tobacco use and abuse of prescription drugs
among youth 6) Participating in the Arkansas Prevention Needs Assessment student survey and
7) Educating youth through a Teen Summit on Alcohol and Tobacco Prevention.

Strategic Prevention Framework Grant
(Underaged Drinking Prevention)
The Strategic Prevention Framework Grant is aimed at reducing underage drinking
in Madison
County. Six hundred thousand dollars will be used over a four year time
frame to educate youth
and their parents on the social, physical and legal
consequences of underage drinking. The main
goal of this grant is to make underage
drinking unacceptable among all community members'
young and old alike. “Holding
young people solely responsible for underage drinking is like
holding fish responsible
for dying in a polluted stream.” (FACE project)
